Abstract
Fine-grained monitoring of software energy consumption is essential to optimize data center efficiency. Existing hardware sensors, like PDUs or RAPL, cannot measure power at the container level, and defining accurate power models is typically slow and host-specific. This paper presents SmartWatts, a lightweight software-defined power meter that uses online calibration to automatically adjust CPU and DRAM power models. Unlike previous approaches, SmartWatts requires no prior training or special hardware, enabling accurate, container-level power monitoring across diverse machines.
